Episode 71 - We are family (I’ve got all my sisters and me)
Have you ever adopted an animal?
Adoption is actually a biblical concept. Whether you’ve ever adopted before, we can all understand the concept of taking in something or someone who may not have had a home.
This week, we're still talking through Promises of the Cross and today we are focusing on Romans 8:14-16.
"For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God"
There is so much to unpack from these three verses, but what really stands out to us is the concept of sonship. If we are trusting in Christ, we are all adopted.
We are now the same as Jesus Christ in God's eyes!
There's something about adoption that opens our eyes to the love of God. AJ adopted her daughter when she was 12 months old. She has a biological daughter as well and the two are 4 months apart. They are similar in age. They share the same bedroom, they are treated equally, they have the same last name, same resources.. But they are totally different.
AJ’s relationships with them are different because they are different people. Not because they are biological or adopted. And our experiences in God's providence have been different as well. But it does not make any one of us “less than” any other.
Like AJ’s daughters, we are not only sons, but we are heirs to Christ.
That is our promise. When you are adopted, you’re an equal. You were actually chosen. God has chosen you! If you are trusting in him, He has pursued you. He knows you better than anybody. He knows your needs before you ask. He has taken you in, at the price of His son’s blood.
Next time you think about adoption, as far as in the earthly sense, think about the big picture of God rescuing you from certain death. And now you stand as a son or daughter of God.
See you next week for the last episode of the Promises of the Cross series.
